During the production process certain compounds are added. These compounds while giving the PVC their beneficial qualities also increase the risk of ignition. In order to reduce the risk of combustion, flame retardants are added to the poly vinyl chloride. The amount of these retardants can alter the beneficial qualities of the plastics such as pliability. With growing concern about halogenated materials being released into the environment, other materials have been sought as flame retardants. Typically inorganic fillers such as alumina trihydrate or magnesium hydroxide are used.
A recent study by scientists in China have found that by using a zinc compound to coat the poly vinyl chloride less retardant can be used while increasing the fire retardancy.
This improves the quality of the PVC as well. It is my opinion that more research should be conducted.One thing that needs to be addressed is the byproducts of the combustion of PVC. Traditionally the fire retarding fillers of alumina and magnesium are relatively non-toxic and produce relatively non-toxic byproducts when burned. While they may not be as effective as the new zinc coating, the benefits of zinc may be overshadowed by the fact that zinc chloride gas, formed by combustion is given off. This should be studied before the industry jumps the gun and begins manufacturing the zinc-coated PVC.
